BUDDY ZAMORA. . .
The man behind the vision

Buddy Zamora’s vision of a true championship course is aimed towards hosting many international golf tournaments.  The course has been made more challenging by lengthening it from 6,500 yards to 7,200 yards, from par-71 to par-72, to make it a full championship course. Buddy Zamora is a renowned Philippine industry player in the fields of mining, renewable energy, agro industries, transport development, and telecommunications, and holds the chairmanship for various companies in the said fields. Buddy was thrilled to redevelop the golf course but he needed people he can trust to deliver the course that he wanted. Soon after, Buddy Zamora put his son Bodie to be responsible for the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the course, while still remaining very involved in the new design.

STUNNING TRANSFORMATION

The course was re-carpeted using Paspalum TE, a grass variety from Georgia USA that is salt water tolerant. Bunkers, bridges, tee houses, waterways, and cart paths were all subjected to major rehabilitation. Nine holes were rerouted, but the 11th and 17th — both par-3s — and 18th, the par-4 closing hole were left virtually untouched in keeping with the layout of the original designer, professional golf legend and course designer, Gary Player. The front nine remains the mountain course while the back nine is the ocean course. Among the lucky few who have played the new course, veteran professional golf journalist Mike Besa takes pride in saying that the redesigned course is one of the best he has played. The resulting golfscape of the new layout cannot be anything but spectacular, given the natural environs of the place, and the challenge posed by the new layout is a challenge for all.  It has more than elevated the course as a masterpiece of redesign. “My father is very happy how it came out,” Bodie said.  “We finished third quarter of 2019 but because of weather problems, we didn’t want to rush the opening.” Though the course is now more open, more exposed, the essence of the original course has been mostly preserved.  And with several tees to a hole, the course can accommodate players of various skills. Despite the changes, Bodie believes most of the features of the old Puerto Azul golf course were kept, adding that Gary Player, now in his 80s, would be proud of what it has become. “I watched a video long time ago about their golf course philosophy and my Dad thought that this would help guide us in the redesign of the course,” he said. “Bodie made his own mark in this golf course,” Buddy said upon seeing the finished product. The resulting transformation is an impeccable championship golf course filled with exciting and unexpected turns and visual surprises for both the serious and leisure golfers.
